The Story - The scene where Doyle and Russo chase down the dealer near the beginning and Gene Hackmanshouts out his famous question "Did you ever pick your feet in Poughkeepsie?" is based on actual "good cop/bad cop" interrogations by the real "French Connection" detectives, Eddie Egan and Sonny Grosso according to William Friedkin in the DVD commentary. Grosso would gingerly ask a suspect direct questions about his crimes, then Egan would always butt in and yell unusual questions like the Poughkeepsie one. The suspect would get so rattled by Egan's offbeat questioning that he felt more comfortable answering Grosso's, thus tending to eventually incriminate himself.

The Story - Of all the towns in all of Disney’s reach, director Lauren MacMullan said she chose Poughkeepsie for several reasons, not the least of which being its pleasant sound. “I picked the town thinking it’s an American city everyone would have known in 1928,” MacMullan told the Poughkeepsie Journal, “and as I think anyone would admit, it’s fun to say. And, to seal the deal, our wonderful Technical Director John Murrah is from Poughkeepsie.“ Bugs Bunny was always trying to get to Pismo Beach. Minnie just wants her act to play in Poughkeepsie.”

The Story - “There’s something about upstate New York,” said Dowdle, who is originally from St. Paul, Minn. “It’s a cosmopolitan area, but it has real nature and spaces where somebody could lurk and stalk people and do terrible things and probably stay unnoticed for a long time.”
Though he’d never been to Poughkeepsie before shooting three days of exterior scenes, Dowdle said he and his brother both liked the name “Poughkeepsie” and its proximity and contrast with New York City. “New York City has such an anonymous element and I think there’s a certain point at which some of the danger of New York City spills off into the countryside around it,” he said.
